Charley and Edie Harper met on the first day of class at the Art Academy of Cincinnati. Throughout their lives together, they have continued to create artwork that is youthful, whimsical, and influential to the present day. As with many artistic couples, cross-pollination of ideas is evident. This exhibition, which examines works from 1940 to 1960 by both artists, allows you to discover parallels between the Harpers’ works for yourself.
Best known for his geometric images of wildlife, especially birds and ladybugs, Charley Harper has developed an immediately recognizable style. As visitors to this exhibition will see, his experience working for a local design agency, now known as LPK, brought out his keen sense of design. Flattened, abstracted forms—a hallmark of mid-century modernism—became visible in both Edie’s and Charley’s works. Edie’s interest in photography also developed her eye for abstract forms, and a graphic sensibility is evident in her paintings and enamel on copper pieces, also included in this exhibition.
