Cincinnati Art Museum Behind the Scenes in Conservation: On a Closed day. Sometimes we need more space than our Conservation labs provide. Below, on a recent Monday when the museum was closed, we took over the Great Hall for the morning. We had a large contemporary painting on canvas that was due to be rolled for storage, and this was the best place to do it. Here some helpers from the Registration department are removing the dozens of tacks that secured the painting to its multi-membered stretcher. The painting was rolled face out on the large cardboard tube behind them, along with an interleaving material, then wrapped. (It’s done face-out so that the paint is not compressed in a concave orientation.) The stretcher was taken apart, as it’s designed to, and the rolled painting and stretcher were moved to storage. To exhibit the painting in the future, the stretcher will be reassembled and the painting re-stretched on it. This is a common conservation procedure with large modern paintings on canvas, though one that we always need to scheme to find floor space to perform! 1 hour ago via Facebook

Creative Encounters: Japanese Inspired Prints

Explore the Art Museum, experiment with art, and express your creativity in this new monthly program for adult visitors.  Each Creative Encounter will feature a visiting artist who will lead a tour of works in the Art Museum’s permanent collection and special exhibitions, followed by a discussion of his/her own work.  Each event will culminate in a hands-on project, which will allow participants to experiment with the media and techniques that have been discussed over the course of the day. 

Reservations required.  $10 general admission, $5 for members and college students
