Cincinnati Art Museum Behind the Scenes in Conservation: On a Closed day. Sometimes we need more space than our Conservation labs provide. Below, on a recent Monday when the museum was closed, we took over the Great Hall for the morning. We had a large contemporary painting on canvas that was due to be rolled for storage, and this was the best place to do it. Here some helpers from the Registration department are removing the dozens of tacks that secured the painting to its multi-membered stretcher. The painting was rolled face out on the large cardboard tube behind them, along with an interleaving material, then wrapped. (It’s done face-out so that the paint is not compressed in a concave orientation.) The stretcher was taken apart, as it’s designed to, and the rolled painting and stretcher were moved to storage. To exhibit the painting in the future, the stretcher will be reassembled and the painting re-stretched on it. This is a common conservation procedure with large modern paintings on canvas, though one that we always need to scheme to find floor space to perform! 3 hour ago via Facebook

Slow Art Day

April 12, 2014 - 11:00 am to 01:00 pm

WHERE:
Attendees meet in Front Lobby

From SlowArtDay.com:

One day each year – April 12 in 2014 – people all over the world visit local museums and galleries to look at art slowly. Participants look at five works of art for 10 minutes each and then meet together over lunch to talk about their experience. That’s it. Simple by design, the goal is to focus on the art and the art of seeing.

Take a stroll with us through the galleries from 11 - 12 p.m. discussing 5 pieces of art chosen by Lisa Jameson, Associate Professor of Art Education at Northern Kentucky University.

From 12 - 1 p.m., enjoy a box lunch ($10/person) in the Castellini Room accompanied by conversations with Lisa and members of our Learning and Interpretation Staff.
