Cincinnati Art Museum Behind the Scenes in Conservation: On a Closed day. Sometimes we need more space than our Conservation labs provide. Below, on a recent Monday when the museum was closed, we took over the Great Hall for the morning. We had a large contemporary painting on canvas that was due to be rolled for storage, and this was the best place to do it. Here some helpers from the Registration department are removing the dozens of tacks that secured the painting to its multi-membered stretcher. The painting was rolled face out on the large cardboard tube behind them, along with an interleaving material, then wrapped. (It’s done face-out so that the paint is not compressed in a concave orientation.) The stretcher was taken apart, as it’s designed to, and the rolled painting and stretcher were moved to storage. To exhibit the painting in the future, the stretcher will be reassembled and the painting re-stretched on it. This is a common conservation procedure with large modern paintings on canvas, though one that we always need to scheme to find floor space to perform! 2 hour ago via Facebook

Summer Teacher Institute

July 22, 2014 to July 24, 2014 - 08:00 am to 02:00 pm

Join us for the Cincinnati Art Museum’s 12th Annual Summer Teacher Institute. This year’s Institute will be the first of a two part series focusing on art in the 20th and 21st centuries.

This summer, we will examine 20th century works within the art museum’s permanent collection while additionally highlighting our special exhibition, Cries in the Night: German Expressionist Prints around World War I. Moving along the art historical timeline of the 20th century we will discuss art movements such as German Expressionism, Cubism, Dadaism, Surrealism, and Pop Art. Furthermore, to better grasp the vast cultural shifts that occurred during this century, we will investigate the meanings of modernism and postmodernism.

Summer Teacher Institute programming will include special guest lecturers, docent-led gallery tours, curriculum development brainstorming sessions, and hands–on art making workshops. Programming is open to PreK-12th grade teachers of all disciplines, as well as pre-service, retired, museum, college, and community art educators.

Graduate credit through Ashland University available for an additional fee.
