Moving Images: Under the Starry Sky (Des Étoiles) directed by Dyana Gaye (2013)

10/5/2017 at 6 p.m.

From Dakar to Turin and New York, Senegalese director Dyana Gaye’s film follows three migrant destinies. As diverse journeys cross paths in dynamic global cities, the film compels viewers to think about exile and displacement but also the hopes, dreams, and possibilities that lead people to leave and to return.

This film is selected in dialogue with current exhibition Anila Quayyum Agha: All the Flowers Are for Me. Referencing her own diaspora experience, Pakistani-American artist Agha makes intricate laser-cut steel cubes that, when lit from within, transform the gallery with light and shadow. Through these immersive installations, Agha aims to create a space of belonging and shared experience.

Curator of South Asian Art, Islamic Art and Antiquities Ainsley M. Cameron hosts this special screening, with an introduction by Thérèse Migraine-George, Professor of French and Women’s, Gender and Sexuality Studies at the University of Cincinnati, and post-film discussion with Michael Gott, director of programming at the Center for Film & Media Studies at UC.
