Who Are You, Polly Maggoo?

Directed by William Klein, 1966, 105 minutes, French/English subtitles

Done in a cocktail of styles – Méliès, cinéma vérité, Mack Sennet, Vogue, photo novellas, tabloid press – Who Are You, Polly Maggoo systematically explodes modern mythology. Director William Klein created the film after nearly a decade working as a fashion photographer for Vogue. Polly Maggoo (played by Dorothy MacGowan) is Klein’s pseudo-portrait of a super model. Thirty years ahead of its time, Polly Maggoo satirizes TV's top model feeding frenzy, the world of fashion and brainwashing in general.

Chief Curator and Curator of Fashion Arts and Textiles Cynthia Amnéus hosts this screening, with an introduction to the film by Stephanie Sadre-Orafai, University of Cincinnati Associate Professor of Anthropology. Amnéus and Sadre-Orafair will be joined by Brooke Brandewie, UC Assistant Professor of Fashion Design Product Strategy, and Ashley Newsome Kubley, UC Assistant Professor of Fashion Design, for a post-film discussion.
