Join Curator of Prints Kristin Spangenberg to learn more about the connoisseurship of Henri de Toulouse Lautrec’s lithographs. Lautrec was one of the greatest printmakers of the 1890s, who was important for his mastery of line, his innovative use of flat color, and incisive commentary on his contemporary social milieu.  He portrayed the bohemian life of Montmartre, the hub of the artistic, intellectual and literary avant-garde, with its growing number of commercialized theaters, café-concerts, cabarets, and dance halls. He made striking images for public consumption as advertisements, posters and illustrations based on dance hall performers, poets and denizens of the demimonde. With their sweeping lines and bold areas of color and startling patterns, his posters for the nocturnal amusements of Paris were heavily influenced by Japanese prints. This move into popular culture, with a love of character and his flair for color lithography, makes him one of the most important Post-Impressionists.
