Lewis Henry Meakin (1850–1917)
Eden Park, ca. 1900
oil on canvas
33 x 44 in.

Born in England, Meakin immigrated to Cincinnati with his father at the age of thirteen. By the end of his life he had contributed immeasurably to the history of Cincinnati art. He served as a curator at the Cincinnati Art Museum, taught at the Art Academy of Cincinnati for thirty years, and co-founded the Cincinnati Art Club. Specializing in landscapes, Meakin often painted near or around the location of the Art Museum. He once wrote, “In Eden Park and in the vicinity of Cincinnati generally, while there is much that is very fine indeed in line and form, a very interesting characteristic feature is the variety of peculiar atmospheric effects in which the smoke, incidental to a great city, plays its part.” Although somewhat colorful, this view of Eden Park does possess a dull gray sky and a haze over the distant hill, hinting at the city’s industrial prosperity.
