Thomas Satterwhite Noble (1835–1907)
Back to School, 1859
oil on canvas
20 x 16 in.

Although not born in Cincinnati, Noble’s influence on the art of the Queen City is immeasurable. In 1869 Noble was chosen as the first director of the new McMicken School of Design (now the Art Academy of Cincinnati). Somewhat overshadowed by his famous successor, Frank Duveneck, Noble steadfastly headed the academy for thirty-five years, launching the careers of many of the artists represented in this exhibition. Known for his large narrative paintings tackling serious issues such as slavery and suicide, this charming genre picture of a schoolboy counting his fingers is one of his earliest known works, painted at the age of twenty-four.
