Notes:
[1] Mr. and Mrs. Lee Ault loaned the painting to Georges Rouault-Retrospective Loan Exhibition, Institute of Modern Art, Boston; Phillips Gallery, Washington D.C.; and the San Francsico Museum of Art, November 1940 to March 1941, no. 4.

[2] The Pierre Matisse Gallery assigned the painting inventory number 1251 and loaned it to French Art in the 19th and 20th Centuries, Rhode Island School of Design, November 1942.

[3] The Pierre Matisse Gallery invoice for the sale of the painting to Johnston is dated February 19, 1943. The family records indicate she owned it in December 1942. Johnston may have acquired the painting on approval from the gallery before she made the decision to purchase it. See correspondence, July 13, 1972, and May 22, 2000. The Pierre Matisse Gallery archives are held at the Pierpont Morgan Library, New York.

[4] The painting was retained by Johnston's niece, Jean Weaver of Hissborough, California, until 1971, when it formally entered the CAM's collection.
