docent corps

The Art Museum is currently not accepting any Docent applications

The Docent Corps began, in 1960, with twenty-eight docents as a joint effort between the Cincinnati Art Museum and the Junior League of Cincinnati and in cooperation with Cincinnati Public Schools. Since 1975, the Docent Corps has been under the guidance of the Cincinnati Art Museum’s Education Division. Join the over 140 active docents who make up the Docent Corps today.

General Information

What is a docent?
As a docent, you are a volunteer educator trained to present tours and programs for the public. You share your knowledge of the Art Museum and its collection with a broad range of audiences, both in the Art Museum and in the community, to encourage a life-long love of the visual arts.

Training Requirements
No previous knowledge of art or art history is required to become a docent. Docent candidates, individuals preparing to become docents, participate in a three-semester training course that explores the Art Museum’s collection, general art history, and strategies for touring various age groups. Following successful completion of the course, candidates graduate to docent status and are requested to volunteer as a docent for at least two years.

Docents continue their education of the permanent collection, special exhibitions, and touring techniques through an on-going training program held twice monthly. In addition, there are optional workshops, day-trips, and other events for docents to expand their knowledge and friendships.

Are there any fees?
Docents pay annual dues of $30. In addition, all Art Museum volunteers are required to be Museum members.

When is the next training class?
The Art Museum is not currently recruiting new docent candidates but is happy to take the name and contact information of individuals who would like to be informed about future opportunities.

How Can I Learn More?
If you would like to receive more information about the docent program, please contact the Cincinnati Art Museum’s Assistant Curator for Docent Learning, 953 Eden Park Drive, Cincinnati, Ohio 45202, at (513) 639-2997, or email [email protected]
