His Legacy

It is evident that Carl Steckelmann collected and commissioned works believing in their scientific value and their eventual destination, through purchase or gift, at museums like Cincinnati and the Smithsonian National Museum. To this day, these works provide rich and invaluable documentation of the nineteenth-century material culture of the Congo region, which in turn, offers unique information about venerable objects, traditions, and techniques of an earlier time.
