Plaited and intricately patterned caps were worn by men and women of noble rank as marks of their status. Steckelmann wrote that they were worn only “by free men, who were proud to own them.” Such hats were plaited by men from a variety of materials, including wild cotton, grasses, and banana, palm, and pineapple fibers.
