An Apt and Noble Gift: Gorham's Rebekah at the Well Pitcher with Amy Dehan
In 1854 Cincinnatian Lewis Whiteman bought a stately silver pitcher for his youngest daughter, Louisa, to commemorate her marriage to the physician William Carson. A silver pitcher for the table or sideboard was a very appropriate gift for a new bride, yet the symbolism in the design of this pitcher instilled it with particular meaning for its time and carried special significance as a gift from father to daughter on her wedding day.
