Hi Karen! I hear you like to travel.
I am always planning a trip. Traveling reminds me of how many kind people there are in the world and how glad I am to call Cincinnati home.
Why is art important to you?
Art allows me to communicate my thoughts and emotions and express what it means to be human. It creates a community of making and viewing for everyone. Making art can be work, but it is so worth it in the end.
If you were a type of art supplies, what would you be?
I would be clay! It can be shaped into anything. Clay starts out malleable, but when fired becomes permanent. It comes from the earth, is grounded, and is all we have left from some ancient cultures. From dishes to bathtubs to sculptures, the transformations are magical. And, when it breaks, it can be fixed.
What inspired you to apply for the residency?
I am a longstanding fan of the Cincinnati Art Museum, and the residency is a wonderful opportunity to create an installation inspired by art in the permanent collection. The REC offers plenty of space for my work to play and for visitors to interact with it.
Tell me a bit about your REC installation.
My interactive installation draws inspiration from L.A. Rogers’s panoramic landscape paintings. You and Me and the Space Between: Our Expedition Starts Now shares with visitors a playful space to explore scale and awe.
