EXTENDED: Masterpieces of Japanese Art
Now – January 3, 2016
Feast your eyes on approximately 100 Japanese masterpieces from the permanent collection of the Cincinnati Art Museum. The show highlights the ties between Cincinnati and Japan and is designed to provide viewers not only with a better understanding of Japanese art and its aesthetics, but also a unique regional perspective through the history of the collection. Early Cincinnati Galleries
New Permanent Galleries -- Now Open
The Cincinnati Art Museum’s Early Cincinnati galleries has reopened to tell the first chapter in the story of the Cincinnati Wing, detailing the city’s rise as an artistic center from its founding in the late 18th century through the years leading to the Civil War. Recent renovations allow for the galleries to lead chronologically into the other galleries for the first time since the Wing’s debut in 2003. Free admission. IMAGES HERE

Now – November 8, 2015
This special feature presents a selection of 26 photographs from the Cincinnati Art Museum’s collection about which some details are unknown. The photographs, from the mid-19th century to present day, are without the name of the photographer, or the identity of the sitter, or the place and time the picture was made. Five Cincinnati-area writers responded to these gaps in knowledge with poems, short stories and other creative responses which are presented alongside some of the photographs. Free admission. New Antiquities Galleries
New Permanent Galleries – Now Open
The Cincinnati Art Museum’s permanent antiquities collection will be reopened in a new, larger space this fall. Located in the new Sherie and Len Marek Family Gallery and Millard F. Rogers Jr. Gallery, 101 – 102, the galleries will be organized thematically for the first time and will include some items that have never been on view before. They are next to the Rosenthal Education Center (REC), which provides interactive activities for families. The new theme for the Center will be “The Ancient World.” IMAGES HERE
Sublime Beauty: Raphael’s Portrait of a Lady with a Unicorn
Now – January 3, 2016
The Cincinnati Art Museum and the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco in collaboration with the Foundation for Italian Art & Culture present Raphael’s Portrait of Lady with a Unicorn on loan from the Galleria Borghese in Rome. Painted around 1505, this mysterious blond and blue-eyed sitter epitomizes Raphael’s excellence in female portraiture during his Florentine period. Free admission. Field Guide: Photographs by Jochen Lempert
Now – March 6, 2016
The first major U.S. museum exhibition devoted to the celebrated German photographer will be on view at the Cincinnati Art Museum. Trained as a biologist, Lempert photographs plants, animals, and other natural phenomena with both scientific acumen and a poetic appreciation of natural beauty. Art in Bloom
October 22 – October 25, 2015
Creative individuals and professional floral designers from Cincinnati interpret the museum’s permanent art collection with floral displays for this unique event. During Art in Bloom, 70 eye-catching displays of vibrant flowers help visitors see the museum in a whole new way. IMAGES HERE
High Style: Twentieth-Century Masterworks from the Brooklyn Museum Costume Collection
November 7, 2015 – January 24, 2016
High Style traces the evolution of fashion from 1910 through 1980 with garments and accessories by the most influential European and American designers of the 20th century, including Schiaparelli, Chanel, Dior, Givenchy, Norell, Scaasi, and Charles James, among others. Tree of Life
November 17, 2015 – January 10, 2016
In its third year, this holiday tradition features a tree that has been transformed into a sculptural piece of art. Created by Cincinnati artists Matt Kotlarczyk, it’s an interactive exhibit that encourages visitors to place handwritten wishes for the New Year into glass vials that then adorn the tree. The wishes will later be burned, and the ashes will be used to plant a new tree at the Art Museum in 2016. Free admission. Images available upon request. Please email [email protected].
Conservation on View: Zaragoza’s Retablo of St. Peter
January 26 – April 24, 2016
Cincinnati Art Museum’s Chief Conservator and paintings conservator Serena Urry will be on view cleaning The Retablo of St. Peter. The Spanish altarpiece, attributed to Lorenzo Zaragoza, dates to around 1400. Its 18 painted panels show scenes from the life of St. Peter on a rich gilded background. Progress in the conservation treatment will be visible over the course of the exhibit. When Urry is not present, a video describing the cleaning will run. Images available upon request. The Etching Revival from Daubigny to Twachtman
February 13 – May 8, 2016
Explore the renaissance of etching from the late 1850s through the turn of the century across three continents. Artists including Edgar Degas, Edouard Manet Mary Cassatt, Seymour Haden, James McNeill Whistler, Charles Platt, Thomas Moran and Cincinnatians Mary Louise McLaughlin, Henry Farny and John Twachtman will be featured. The Rosenthal Education Center (REC)
New Permanent Family Space – Opened in March 2015

The Rosenthal Education Center (REC) is the art education space inside the museum. Through dedicated interactive exhibition and studio space, the collection of the Cincinnati Art Museum is brought to life for children of all ages. The REC encouraged families to discover the Art Museum’s collection in a fun, immersive, hands-on, and safe manner through a variety of experiences.
