[2]; (Gimbel Bros., New York, probably April 8, 1938-?, sold to); Alexander F. Anderson, Chicago, ?-1945, given to; Cincinnati Art Museum, 1945-present. [1] A. L. Nicholson placed the painting in an earlier sale at Christie's--February 7, 1936, lot 46--but it failed to meet the reserve price and was returned to him. Nicholson placed the painting in the April 8, 1938 Christie's sale without a reserve price and it sold to Waters. See correspondence, October 2, 2001. [2] Correspondence with Christie's on October 2, 2001, identifies the purchaser to have been named Waters. According to John Hayes, in his unpublished manuscript for British Painting in the CAM, the buyer of the painting was "with Gimbel Bros." Thus, Waters may have acquired the painting for Gimbel Bros.
