48th Annual Colonial Dames Lecture & Tea
Hidden Stories in Early American Interiors with Dr. Jennifer Van Horn
As art museums and historic sites across the country readdress their presentations of American art, overlooked narratives are coming to the fore. These include the relationship between enslavement and refinement within early American interiors and the works of art that animated them. Join Dr. Jennifer Van Horn of the University of Delaware as she reveals more about the unpaid laborers who created objects made of fine materials like mahogany and silver, and the work of enslaved people required to maintain and use these artworks. Thinking through our museum’s Colonial and Federal Gallery which features the collection of the NSCDA Ohio, Van Horn will consider the power of shifting traditional narratives to encompass Black expertise, labor, and creativity.
Lecture begins in the Fath Auditorium at 2:00 p.m. with tea to follow in the Great Hall and Terrace Cafe.
Free for Art Museum and NSCDA Ohio Members. $10 for the general public.
