Heine, a collector with a penchant for the Barbizon school, began collecting art around 1912 and continued until the mid-1940s. The majority of the paintings were acquired for her Cincinnati home during the 1920s and 1930s, but specific dates of purchase for most are unknown. In 1940 she gave with life interest a large group of paintings to the CAM. Château Thierry was not included in the original list of paintings that would eventually come to the CAM (compiled probably in 1940), but it was included in the final group that came to the CAM in 1949.
