Notes: [1] Brothers Ferdinand and Pierre Osmond were friends of Captain Puyparlier and Corot. Alfred Robaut made a drawing of the painting at the home of Pierre Osmond in 1874. Robaut, L'oeuvre de Corot, Paris: H. Floury, 1905, no. 206. [2] Frappier is included in the painting's proveannce in a few early sources: Maud Dale, Before Manet to Modigliani from the Chester Dale Collection, New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1929, no.5; Stedelijk Museum, Honderd Jaar Fransche Kunst, exh. cat., summer 1938, no. 40. [3] Published by Maud Dale in 1929, see footnote 2. Loaned from the Chester Dale Collection, New York to Museum of Modern Art, Corot Daumier, October 16-November 23, 1930, no.8. [4] In April 1932, Knoedler & Co. included Portrait of Captain Faulte du Puyparlier in an exhibition of Military and Naval Portraits. It is unclear whether the painting was loaned to the Gallery for the exhibition or whether they owned it outright. Art Digest, April 15, 1932, 14; and Art News, April 23, 1928, 1 and 7. [5] Loaned from Paul Rosenberg, Paris, to the Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam, for the exhibition Honderd Jaar Fransche Kunst, July 2-September 25, 1938 no. 40. Rosenberg requested in a letter of September 27, 1938, to the Stedelijk Museum that the paintings he loaned remain at the museum until they could be safely transported to his London office, Rosenberg & Helft. The Stedelijk Museum sent a list of the works they held for Rosenberg to the London office on September 28, which included Portrait of Captain Puyparlier. On October 12 the London office requested that the paintings be sent from Amsterdam to London. A letter of November 9 acknowledges the arrival of Portrait of Captain Puyparlier and other works in London. It is unknown when the painting arrived in New York, but Rosenberg, who came to New York in September 1940 and opened a Gallery there in 1941, loaned it to the Philadelphia Museum of Art, May 11-June 16, 1946, no. 8. He also included the painting in a 1947 exhibition at his New York gallery, Paintings by Corot, March 10-March 29, no.1. See correspondence, February 13, 2002, CAM curatorial file and photocopies of correspondence between Stedelijk Museum, Paul Rosenberg, and Rosenberg and Helft. [6] Otto and Eloise Spaeth acquired the painting before October 1952 as it was included in an exhibition of the Spaeth Collection at the Munson-Williams-Proctor Insitute, Utica, NY, October 1952, no. 7.
